Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the thin layer of tissue that surrounds your internal organs (mesothelium). Mesothelioma is a cancer that is both deadly and aggressive. Although there are treatments for mesothelioma, many people with the disease will never be cured.
Doctors divide mesothelioma into different groups depending on whether portion of the mesothelium is affected. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs (pleura). This type of cancer is known as pleural mesothelioma. Other types of mesothelioma, which are less prevalent, affect tissue in the abdomen, around the heart, and around the testicles (peritoneal mesothelioma).
