Since 2014 I have been teaching a free online course “Science of Happiness”. More than 450 thousand people in the world have passed since the launch of it. I also give lectures on happiness for representatives of business, healthcare, science, public administration. Listeners want to make happy not only themselves, but also society.

Based on experience, I identified three lessons that motivate the most.

It is important to understand what happiness is

Happiness is not a new concept. We can easily determine our condition on the scale of happiness. Know what happiness does not mean becoming happy.

The first mistake is to equate it to fleeting pleasure. Something pleasant happens to us, we consider it a happiness. Following this logic in order to be happy, you need to build an endless chain of pleasant moments. But we do not become happier from the fact that we accumulate expensive things or forcing ourselves to experience stormy delight.

The study of Barbara Fredrickson from the University of North Carolina showed: pleasant events really contribute to the fact that we feel happy. However, people who direct every effort to maximize pleasure often donate communication and do not help others. As a result, they turn out to

be less happy.

Also, do not try to feel happy constantly. Research Iris Mauss and June Gruber showed that this only interferes with genuine happiness.

Everything has its time, pleasure including. Laugh over the joke, relish delicious food, grab the warmth of love, but admit and express feelings that arise in difficult situations: anger, sadness, fear. They are important information signals and suggest what to do next. Learn to be persistent to recover after testing and learn from them lessons.

The main thing is awareness

Over the past 30 years, scientists have been exploring the phenomenon of awareness: both specific practices (for example, meditation), as well as a general attitude to the present moment with kindness, softness and understanding.

Awareness makes it possible to identify existing models of thinking and experiences. Helps to determine the beliefs, habits and stereotypes that prevent you from becoming happy. Suppose you hate to apologize, but apologies reduce the level of chronic stress, increase productivity and make it happier. Awareness allows you to analyze the unwillingness to apologize and overcome it.

Interesting data were obtained using the Track Your Happiness application. Thousands of people in it note what they do and how they feel at this time. We get more pleasure from the lesson if we are focused on it.

It doesn’t matter what we do: sit in line or watch a fascinating movie. If we pay attention to the current moment, and do not think about something else, we enjoy the process more. Other studies prove that in a similar way, awareness increases the pleasure of sex and chocolate.
