Each time I think about which destination I would like to visit the
most, one particular place stands out. Heaven on earth as I call it. It’s Bora Bora. Set in the middle of the French Polynesia, this idyllic tropical island of almost unreal beauty looks like it was made by God himself. Located some 150 miles northwest of Tahiti, Bora Bora is just one small island hidden among 115 islands and atolls that make up French Polynesia. Formed by an ancient sunken volcano, the six mile long and the two mile wide island is actually one main island surrounded by a chain of many small islands.

Accessible by a plane or by boat, Bora Bora is roughly halfway between Peru and Australia, which makes it one of the most remote and secluded islands on earth. But, from the moment you arrive here, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip. Countless turquoise lagoons encircle the island protected by massive reefs creating miles of sheltered beachfront. If you come to the location this spectacular, you’ll want your accommodation to match as well. Luckily, the first hotel built on the island (The Bora Bora hotel) is just as spectacular as the island itself and the perfect place to write that guest post.

Hotel Bora Bora was the very first resort to open on this cluster of idyllic islands so it’s no surprise that it sits on the most scenic spot on the island – at a place called point Braititi (a location blessed with an almost 360 degree panorama). Hotel Bora Bora has 54 traditional Polynesian villas and bungalows dotted among green tropical gardens. The signature attractions of the hotel are its fifteen overwater bungalows. The bungalows are special because they’re all made of natural wood and look like they’ve been here for ages.

These bungalows offer guests a unique opportunity to wake with the ocean at their feet or to sip coconuts while dipping a toe into the lagoon right outside their room. When the sun hits the white sand and bounces of the coral reef beneath the lagoon shallow waters, you’ll see colors you’ve never seen before. Every room here is a room with a view; a breathtaking view. Once you’ve checked in and gotten settled, you can start discovering what Bora Bora is best known for – scuba diving. The island’s protected lagoons and coral reefs have formed an ideal sanctuary for a diverse population of south pacific marine life.

More than a thousand species of brightly colored fish and marine animals call Bora Bora home. The best of all is that the guests of Bora Bora don’t need to be scuba certified or even know how to swim. They can just put on a specially designed glass panelled helmet and take a stroll on the lagoon bed 30 feet down. It’s called an aqua safari and it’s one of the best ways to experience the underwater beauty of Bora Bora. Bora Bora is perfect for couples on honeymoon. Romantic beaches and luxurious resorts will make your stay at Bora Bora an experience to remember.

There are lots of gorgeous walks and hikes around this country. You might want to make your itinerary so that your trip goes by Portugal’s highest peak. This is called “Mount Pico”, which is located on the island of Pico. The climate here is of a Mediterranean climate, which is wonderful is you are looking for somewhere with a hot temperature. Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, has a population of over2 million. This city is great if you want to find more out about culture and history. Stroll by the “Lisbon Oceanarium”, which is the largest aquarium in Lisbon. Visit one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the Belem Tower. It is a brilliant example of Portugal’s Manueline architecture. This country is one of the 20 most visited countries by tourists in the world.

For the more discerning traveller seeking to indulge their historical appetite Portugal has a rich offering of tranquil villages that have been witness to 900 years of the country’s history. Perched upon geographical vantage points they have played their part in protecting the surrounding land from invaders, making it Nye on impossible to approach undetected. The form of defence these hilltop fortresses provided was hugely successful; many tried to take the villages over the centuries leaving each with its own incredible story.

If you fancy going somewhere very tropical, then head towards the Algarve and Madeira. Madeira can be visited all year round and is a hot spot for sunbathing and relaxing. This island is famous for its flowers, food and wine. Portuguese cinema is something to see, so buy a ticket at one of the local cinemas around your area in Portugal. Portuguese cuisine is quite varied; however there is a lot of dried cod in most of the recipes. Find a holiday apartment in Lisbon, in Porto or in Madeira to make your holiday to Portugal complete. You will not regret going here on vacation, as the ambiance and the atmosphere that this country has is something that anyone can get used to. Just imagine sunbathing on the beach and feeling your feet next to the glossy sand. Don’t hesitate anymore and book your trip to this wonderful country today.

Take a trip to Rome to see some of the world’s finest historical works of art and modern design brought together in stunning surroundings.

“A great city, whose image dwells in the memory of man,” so said Benjamin Disraeli of Rome, which has a rich tradition of creating stunning imagery to be forever remembered. The city is well-known for its fine artists and throughout Rome you will find artistry on every corner, from the beautiful basilicas to the statues that grace the piazzas. Make sure you shop around for cheap holiday offers, before departing for Rome as staying in the city can be quite expensive.

For the devoted art-lover, there is more than enough to keep you occupied in Rome for several lifetimes, but if you’re pushed for time there are some places that you should make sure you absolutely don’t miss on your visit.

The most important stop for any lover of art on a trip to Rome is Museum Galleria Borghese. Housing the most important collection of Caravaggio paintings in the world, you will see some incredible paintings in the city that so inspired the great painter. The gallery has recently been reopened after an extensive 14-year renovation programme and the setting is now perfect for some of the most beautiful works of art in the world.

The Galleria Borghese is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am; though it’s closed from 1pm on Sunday so make sure you don’t leave it too late to make your trip.

If modern art is more to your taste, take a trip to the Modern National Gallery Viale delle Belle Arte. The gallery boasts a fine collection of 19th and 20th century artists including Goya, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Klimt. In particular, Klimt’s “Mother and Child” is a highlight and is very typical of his expressionist style and rich, luscious colour.

For the oldest collection of artworks on display anywhere in the world, be sure to check out Musei Capitolini. Started in the 15th century by Pope Sixtus IV, the gallery houses a number of Roman sculptures and some important pieces of Greek, Ertruscan and Egyptian art including marble sculptures and inscriptions. The gallery, like many others in Rome, is closed on a Monday so plan your trip accordingly if you want to make sure you see some of the fascinating pieces of art the gallery has on show.

Fans of contemporary art won’t want to miss the Museum of Contemporary Art in the north-eastern quarter of the city. The museum houses work by some of the most important contemporary Italian artists dating from the 1960s to the present day, including pieces from Carla Accardi, Mario Schifano and Mimmo Rotella. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts some fascinating visiting exhibits, including exhibitions through spring and summer 2012 showcasing artwork from Latin America.

The most striking building in Rome given over to the celebration of contemporary art and design, however, is the MAXXI or National Museum of 21st century arts. Designed by architect Zaha Hadid in 1998, the museum took 10 years to complete and now houses a number of permanent collections of artworks by international contemporary artists including Anish Kapoor and Gilbert & George. As well as these permanent exhibits, the museum holds a number of competitions and awards for young and up-and-coming artists which it shows in regular thematic exhibitions. The building itself, heralded by the Guardian as Hadid’s finest work to date, is worth the visit alone for lovers of contemporary architecture and provides a completely different aspect on Rome to that offered by the rest of the city, much of which hasn’t changed a bit in hundreds of years.

If architecture is your passion, you will also find plenty to keep you enthralled in MAXXI’s architecture collection, which puts on display documents and drawings that expose the complexity of modern conceptual architecture.

Whatever your artistic bent, you’re bound to find something to stoke your interest in the many museums and galleries on offer in Rome.

Dubrovnik has long been called the pearl of the Adriatic and is a picture postcard image of a European paradise. The city was founded in the 7th century and called Ragusa. The Golden age of Dubrovnik came in the middle ages when along with the Venetian Empire Dubrovnik was one of Europe’s leading traders being a gateway to the Balkans and the ottoman Empire. After the arrival of Napoleon in 1815 the city fell under the influence of the Hapsburgs where it would remain till after the First World War. In 1979 Dubrovnik was named a UNESCO world heritage site. During the breakup of Yugoslavia Dubrovnik was shelled by the Serb forces overlooking the city, and had much of the old town destroyed. Thanks though to a successful campaign sponsored by UNESCO Dubrovnik is back to its former glory welcoming guests from all over the world who visit the Dalmatian coast each year. Listed below are eight reasons to visit the wonderful city of Dubrovnik.

1) Architecture

Visit Dubrovnik for its Architecture which has remained virtually the same since the 13th century, marvel at the wonders of the Stari Grad (Old Town) as you enter through the Pile gate.

Tour the impressive city walls all 6,364 which encircle the Stari Grad making sure to pay a visit to Europe’s oldest Pharmacy, which has been open since 1391. On this tour you can also stop at the Dubrovnik Museum opposite the Rectors Palace, and see what many say is the most beautiful building in the city, the Sponza Palace in Luza Square.

The skyline of Dubrovnik, in the area around Dubrovnik Cathedral.

If its drinks you are after, go to the Buza bar where you can sit on a terrace above the rocks while watching the sun slowly sinking into the Adriatic.

3) The Dubrovnik Card

Purchase a Dubrovnik card with which you will get a free 150 page travel guide with a map of the city. The card also entitles you to free public transportation and entry to the top eight attractions. The card is also good for discounts at certain restaurants and shops.
5) Plenty of accommodation options

There are plenty of hotels, and guest houses in Dubrovnik, so you should have no problem finding a place to stay. You can also visit Dubrovnik and go self-catering with private apartments available year-round with some overlooking the old town and harbour from as little as 47€ a-night with accommodation for four. If you really want to be at one with nature, there are plenty of camping sites available, just pitch up tour camping tent and save money all the way! Popular campsites include Adriatic, Nevio, Palme, Ponta and Solitudo – there are literally dozens to choose from.

6) Central location to other Dalmatian Coast attractions

A view over Lokrum Beach, near Dubrovnik, Croatia.

7) Beaches

If you want beaches on your holiday then Dubrovnik will not disappoint. The sun spoiled location has a large selection of beaches, try any of Banje, Copacabana, Lapad and Sv Jakov whilst on your holiday. Dubrovnik beaches are renowned for their sparkling water, stretches of rocks but tend to have fairly modest amounts of sand.

Tourists enjoying themselves at the world famous Lapad beach in Dubrovnik.

8 ) The climate

The best time to visit is in the late fall when the throngs of tourists have gone home. The city is one of the stops on many a Mediterranean cruise with over 900,000 visitors from cruise ships alone last year. The climate of Dubrovnik is quite mild with most of the rainfall during the winter months. If you are not arriving by cruise ship, or ferry from Italy Dubrovnik has a new airport 20 kilometres outside the city with connections to most European cities.

I moved to Key West, at the end of the Florida Keys, a few years ago when I had had just about enough of living out in the Boondocks of Big Pine Key. Not that there is anything wrong with BPK, it is a delightful little island about 30 miles North up U.S. 1; that most scenic of bi-ways also known as the Overseas Highway, but it is a rather lonely place if you’re looking for love. Let’s just say that no one lives there for the “Life in the Fast Lane” existence. So, for both the love of fishing and the love of fishing for a relationship, I learned to:

Select the right bait, choose the right tackle, and get ready to make my first cast – Fishing, Key West Style!

Few places on earth offer the variety of world class fishing as Key West, Florida. I like to think I’ve followed in the wake of the great sportsman (and partier), Ernest Hemingway, who put Key West on the map for its marlin, sailfish and Mojitos – as well as its laidback atmosphere. Papa called Key West the St. Tropez of the Poor, but it is anything but a poor man’s destination these days, and don’t I know it!

I love the big game fishing here! You can set your sights on a wide variety of species in a variety of styles. Marlin and sailfish usually top the target list of most trophy anglers, but some deep sea anglers thrill to the dolphin’s (mahimahi)lightening flash attacks, neon green and blue color, and its leaping strikes.

If deep-sea fishing doesn’t grab your gaff, you can try your hand at light tackle – a style of fishing with lighter pound test line and gear that was originated and developed by Key West captains. There is nothing like getting a 5 to 6 foot shark on the end of 12# test line. You are in for the fight of your life with a beast from the top of the food chain!

You might not believe it, butone of the most popular target speciesfor some flats and backcountry anglers are called “Permit”; and no you don’t have to have one to catch one. This fish flashes an invitation with its tail and then puts up a surprising fight for a fish with such a benign name. Some captains call them “backcountry bulldogs”for their dogged perseverance that tests — and thrills — many an angler. You will bring this fish to the boat time and time again, sure that this time the game is up, only to have the reel scream again just to let you know your permit is far from done. An hour-long fight on fly is not uncommon.

Then there is the elusive bonefish. But make no bones about it; stalking the “Grey Ghost” is one of the most thrilling pursuits of flats fishing . The bonefish is most famous for very long first runs, for double backs and for speed. They are known as one of the great challenges of sight casting. Whether the tackle is spin or fly, the cast will probably need to be long and accurate, since the fish are always moving. The skilled angler needs to anticipate where to put the fly or bait.

For many, the tarpon is the ultimate target. Also called the “Silver King” for its very large reflective silver scales andsheer size – averaging 40 to 100 or more pounds, andcan exceed 150 pounds in the Florida Keys! These prehistoric behemoths possess a protruding jaw structure that make their bucket shaped mouths jut upwards. The upward tilt and the hardness of their mouths make it difficult to set a hookand frequently anglers say they “jumped” several tarpon at first. Tarpon will take a crab on a spinning reel and they will also eat a well-presented fly. Expect spectacular leaps from these giants.

Smaller tarpon are found in the Keys year round, but the larger ones migrate from March through July. They arefound rolling and feeding in the finger channels of the backcountry, in shallow grassy basins, or along the edges of bars and flats in up to six feet or water.

These prehistoric fish are known to have swum our seas as long ago as 100 million years ago. They actually possess a “swim bladder” attached to their esophagus that allows them to breathe, or gulp air out of water by rolling on the surface. It allows them to survive in stagnant, oxygen depleted water and it helps the lucky angler to find them.

There are many choices for a wily adversary in Key West as far as fishing goes. I’m still on my own when it comes to human quarry – but there are certainly more fish to fry here on Bone Island no matter how I cut my bait.

Throughout the world there are destinations that people visit for a specific reason. There might be just one, two or a dozen but there are always specific reasons. People visit Orlando to see Walt Disney World, they go to Cairo to see the pyramids or New York City to see the Statue of Liberty. Not all destinations are that easy, though almost every one allows you to film excellent travel videos if you are willing to try.

There are plenty of places all over the world that people will not even consider when planning their vacations. There are many reasons for this, either they have never heard of the town or they have only heard bad things or there is somewhere on their list much more exciting in their minds. The truth is that everything is subjective and one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

So goes the city of Kansas City which is split right down the middle and sits in two different states, Missouri and Kansas. Now if you’re from the United States then as soon as you hear the word Kansas you’ll probably roll your eyes as you imagine farms, fields of corn and absolutely nothing to do. While that might be true in many parts of the state, here in Kansas City nothing could be further from the truth.

What do you do when you visit Kansas City though? Can I really prove to you that there is enough to do here that it would make a cross country trip worthwhile? Can I prove that instead of going to Chicago or Dallas that you should give Kansas City a try? Well that depends on who you are and what you like but I’ll accept the challenge.

Let’s start with the obvious or well, less obvious because Kansas City doesn’t really seem to do a great job promoting the things we think it should. People claim it has, for instance, more boulevards than Paris and more fountains than other any city in the world except for Rome. If that’s true why in the world would you not have that all over your television commercials? But we’re not here to criticize.

Any visit to Kansas City must include two things. Jazz and Barbecue. It doesn’t matter if you absolutely loath both things, this is what you come to Kansas City for. The American Jazz Museum on Vine Street has some great history contained within its walls and a club that opens on the weekends attached right to the museum. Don’t miss the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in the same building.

There are wars every single day fought in Kansas City over the best BBQ and its impossible to name the best. Two of the most popular are Arthur Bryant’s and Gates BBQ although you really can’t go wrong anywhere else if you seek out the opinion of a local who has had a chance to try everything.

If you’re looking for some unique places to stay you’ll watch to check out the Raphael Hotel on the Missouri side and the Chateau Avalon on the Kansas side. Respectively one is a charming boutique hotel and the other will dazzle you with the most awesome themed rooms we’ve ever seen. Think pirates, camelot and the wild west.

Let’s not forget the long list of other places to see here. It’s home to the National World War I Museum which sits below the Liberty Memorial. The Steamboat Arabia Museum offers a look inside one of the oldest excavation projects in United States history and the Toy & Miniature Museum is a favorite for the younger ones in any group.

When it comes down to it, there is virtually no doubt that anyone can find at least one thing that will hold their attention while visiting Kansas City. From fountains and monuments to jazz and barbecue there is something here for all ages and interests. Take some time to research a destination before dismissing it outright and what you find just might surprise you and make for an even more memorable vacation.

Viewed from its northern face.

Spain is one of Europe’s most fascinating and alluring nations. It’s a diverse country with several strong regional identities; it has a rich history to explore as well as contemporary culture to delight in. Although strongly identified with beach holidays, there is so much more that Spain has to offer.
Mountain Breaks

For people looking to enjoy a hiking trip, the mountains of the Pyrenees are hard to beat. With a Catalonian culture and an outlook that is almost as French as it is Spanish, the mountains offer not only great scenery and testing routes, but also beautiful villages to explore. They normally have attractive little Churches in them as well as places to enjoy the local cuisine. Any holiday based in Barcelona or nearby should include a trip to the mountains.

Historical Legacy
But walking holidays in Spain are not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Many will enjoy exploring the historical legacy of the various cultures that have enjoyed hegemony over the nation, as well as the languages and cultures of the different regions. The Moor’s influence is still strongly felt in the architecture of towns such as Cordoba and Granada. Other architectural delights include the modernist urban landscapes of Barcelona and the many Cathedrals and Churches across the country.

Visit the Basque Country

One of the main national identities within Spain is that of the Basque country. With their own fiendishly complex language and history of resistance to central Spanish authority, it is wise to never refer to the residents as Spanish within earshot! Their culture is unique and visiting such places as Bilbao and Pamplona only adds to the wide tapestry of cultural experience that can be found throughout the nation.

The world famous San Fermines festival “running of the bulls”, is staged in Pamplona every July.

Sporting activities

Sports fans will also find plenty to do in Spain. Whilst football clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona are some of the most famous in the world, there is also the chance to participate in a whole host of sporting activities for visitors themselves. Water sports are popular all around the coastline, whilst cycling on roads and mountain trails is very popular. The annual Vuelta Espana is a cycling road race with almost the same status as the Tour de France and following the event round Spain is a great way to see the country as well as follow the sport.

From the Golf Course to the Beach

The Costa del Sol, down in Andalucía, offers some of the best golfing facilities in Europe, as well as the good weather needed to really enjoy a round or two. This is also where some of the most beautiful, as well as most visited, beaches in Spain can be found. Although associated with the livelier aspects of the Spanish tourist experience, quiet coves and quaint fishing villages can still be found.

A different experience entirely can be found in the north west of the country, in Galicia. This greener, wetter part of Spain has a Celtic heritage, with Santiago de Compostuela’s granite aspect making it one of the nation’s most iconic and famous towns. Its architecture seems to gleam with a light of its own when wet.

As a holiday destination, Spain covers a whole host of bases. Whether you are seeking a vineyard tour with a few games of golf, an adventure tour of the mountains or a beach break, you can find it here.

Jake Kashinsky writes regularly about walking holidays in Spain for a range of Spanish travel websites and blogs.

It is a shame that the vast majority of the population of the UK don’t realise how lucky we are to have such a vast wealth of beautiful and compelling locations within our shores. With many people’s holiday itineraries being dependent on the average summer temperature before anything else; many gems are missed in favour for the Mediterranean and other similarly hot destinations. If you look within our own boarders you can see a shiny beauty, a landmark location which should not be overlooked, the Lake District.

Those of you with an adventurous streak (which, I’m guessing will be most – that’s why you are here, right?) the Lake District presents a perfect opportunity for a holiday of a life time whilst being merciful to your wallet and more importantly, the environment – especially for the eco-conscious who count carbon cost as well financial.

Mountain Biking is a truly excellent activity, which ticks many boxes within the adventure holiday list. For starters, there is nothing quite like the feeling of thundering down the side of a mountain or through a forest. It has the ability to quench the insatiable thirst of the speed-freak whilst leaving barely a mark on the environment besides your tire tracks.

If you manage to book a well located hotel in Lake District it means you’ll be within easy distance of the best trails. The Old England Hotel is located just off Lake Windemere close to local bike rental, but more importantly, the stunning lake itself. Whilst it is true that you may require a little bit of driving to reach some of the other “hot spots” in the area, however the time you spend in the car is going to be far out-weighed by that which is spent in the fresh air.

At the moment one of the most common words on people’s lips is “cost”, and this often is heard the loudest when leveled at the holiday. Providing that you already have a sturdy bike, the costs beyond booking accommodation and food is going to be pretty minimal. Although you will need to think ahead and pack some puncture repair kits, some new inner tubes and a small tool-kit amongst some other essentials, the outlay is going to be small.

For those who haven’t guessed it already, the most important reason why the Lake District is an essential location for those mad for mountain biking is linked to something there is an abundance of, mountains. Whilst it is accepted that with every steep, thrilling decent there is going to be a grueling ascent in the equation somewhere, there are few other locations that provide such a variety of terrain and stunning views. The lakes after which the national park is named are some of the most breath taking sights to be had south of the Highlands and this couldn’t be any more true than when seen from atop of one of the stunning peaks.

Exactly how much or little you put into your holiday is really up to you, from three mile circular routes to 20 mile+ cross country treks, just how adventurous are you feeling? For those who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting the Lake District before, it must be noted that you might have to trek a little way to see some of the best sites. But each minute peddling across the top of the hills within sight of Ullswater (above) is easily worth at least ten of each minute it took to get there.

Biking through the Lakes really provides one of the biggest feelings of freedom you can get in the UK without ever being too far from nearest civilisation. So this year, why not trade the sunny climbs of Spain or Italy, be sure to check out what is on your own doorstep – one of the most spectacular jewels of the UK.

Built to defend the harbour on the island against pirate attacks, the morning ends with a visit to the San Felipe fortress.

Rome is a contemporary capital in every sense of the word however rich with historical past, with an abundance of art, architectural mastery and religious beliefs to accommodate each and every traveler, academic or pilgrim. More than 200 decades of heritage have left their mark in every elements of this elegant city. Custom has it that this urban center was created by Romulus on Palatino among the 7 hillsides which the Italian Capital was made near the Tevere river, which ensures that anywhere that you are you are never far from a sensational view of the city.

Probably the most crucial thing in Rome is an effective set of footwear! This isn’t an American city in which you grab the tour bus to view the various points of interest. The entire location is much like an enormous, radiant, open-air museum. Italians certainly are a warm and friendly people, expect you’ll be offered aid should you be standing on a street corner having a guide in your hand along with a perplexed look on your face. Fashion will be the order for the day when out in Rome, a scarf flicked fashionably around a ladies neck and a smart bag over the shoulder, no fanny packs please they certainly spoil the Gucci you know!

I have found that the food on almost all Rome flights is exceptional; but when it comes to getting the real authentic Italian cuisine a little caution is advised. Avoid eating inside the tourist cafes within the primary spots like St.Mark’s square they’re expensive, frequently with inadequate meals and service. Go back a few streets for the modest cafes frequented by the local people and you should get better, less expensive meals as well as get to dine and talk to the genuine Romans.

Coliseum: By far the most famous landmark in Rome is an enormous open-air arena which could support 50,000 Romans. Constructed by the Emperor Titus in AD80 it hosted games, gladiatorial battles as well as flooded with water to provide a location for reconstructions of renowned navel battles.

Sistine Chapel: Located within the Vatican museum, is a full day out in itself, the chapel was wanting a bit of decor so in 1508 Michelangelo was hired to paint the 10,000 sq foot ceiling, single-handedly! The ensuing work required more than four years to accomplish and is also regarded as one of the greatest pieces of art on the planet.

Trevi Fountain

Fontana di Trevi (trevi fountain): A massive and spectacular 18th century fountain designed by Nicola Salvi, It is stated that if you toss a coin using your right hand over your left shoulder you are going to eventually return to Rome.

Piazza Navona: This piazza takes it’s peculiar form from the authentic arena constructed there for exhibits of horsemanship, it is currently a lively, entertaining spot filled with stalls and cafes while in the daytime and portrait and street performing artists at night.

Pantheon: A massive temple created by the Emperor Hadrian around AD120 it had, right up until 1960, the biggest dome on earth. Additionally, it continues to have the original doors now virtually 1,900 years old, truly a remarkable and spectacular building.
Where ever you find yourself in Roma, you will be standing next to a beautiful piece of art, a historical landmark or a restaurant releasing the aromas of fine Italian cuisine.
