Spending a week in Whitby cottages

Spending a week in Whitby cottages

Despite the seaside town’s historic past, Whitby cottages have only recently become incredibly popular. Many are putting this down to the economic downturn, and an increasing number of holidaymakers choosing to stay in the UK rather than head abroad for their annual vacation. Some believe that people are bored of the southern seaside resorts and are heading up to Whitby cottages for a change of scenery and some of the best scenery in the country. One thing’s for sure, Whitby can only benefit from such an upturn.

Whitby cottages are cheap

You could be staying in Whitby cottages for as little as £200 a week. Compare that to a holiday abroad – you’re saving on the petrol, airport parking, flight, airport transfers, hotel room and even tips! Almost all Whitby cottages available at Cottages Whitby have fully equipped kitchens, smart bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms. Which, for £200 is a week, is really great value.

The area

There’s so much to explore around Whitby, you’d be mad not to do it. Go to Robin Hood’s Bay and browse the tea rooms, take a look around Malton’s delightful shops or just enjoy a pub meal in nearby Egton. Whitby town centre is nice and full of history, but you won’t feel like you’ve had a proper Whitby cottage holiday unless you’ve been to some of the surrounding villages

Go on walks around Whitby

With the moors on Whitby’s doorstep, you’ve got to head out for a walk during your stay in a Whitby cottages. Take some proper walking bootas, a backpack and pack some lunch for a day away from the town to soak up the countryside. There are routes for fair weather walkers through to really advanced and skilled hikers to tackle. Remember, always charge your mobile phone before heading out for a long walk from your Whitby cottage, just in case something happens!

Eat, eat, eat!

Whitby is home to some of the best restaurants in the North. Places like the Magpie Cafe, Greens of Whitby and Trenchers are up there with some of the big name seafood restaurants in London. The difference is that you won’t be paying London prices, but will almost certainly be getting better than London dishes! With all ingredients fresh from the market and surrounding areas, you’ll struggle to find better quality dining within 100 miles of Whitby.

Drink, drink, drink!

There are a number of pubs in Whitby and you’d regret not enjoying a good old pint of Black Sheep ale in one of them. Sit next to an open fire with a good newspaper, a piping hot steak and ale pie and a pint of beer and you’ll be set for the day before heading back to your Whitby cottages!

Go fishing near Whitby

Regular fishing trips run from the harbourside each day. The cost is fairly minimal (under £20 including tackle hire) and it’s a great way to spend a relaxing day away from Whitby cottages. If you’ve not got a good set of sea legs, just fish off the harbour, or head to one of the other coastal towns to do some crab baiting.

Go for a drive on the moors around Whitby cottages

Whitby cottages on the moors are perfect for walking from, but if you’re not an active type, you might be better driving over the moors. Go for a drive over Rosedale for stunning sites of old industrial kilns or head further east for breathtaking sites over the North Sea on the roads between Whitby and Scarborough.

  1. Whitby is a very interesting town indeed and Northern Yorkshire is amazing. If the climate was not what it is, I could definitely live there.
(on a personal side note, Whitby is also the northernmost place I’ve been in my life so far).

  2. The place is awesome. And compared to other spots in the UK it is the best value for your money. I used to go to Rye a lot. (love it there) But the cost is really high.

  3. Never been to Whitby before, this place is really nice and beautiful, we are planning for Europe tour by end of this year, maybe to include Whitby in our travel plan:)
