Holiday in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt: Things to Do and See

Sharm el Sheikh, regularly referred to as Sharm, is a resort on the Sinai Peninsula. This makes it one of the most popular beach destinations in Egypt. This is the ideal place to visit with diving, water sports and desert trips being regular activities available here.

Sharm el Sheikh originally began life as a small fishing village and then this was eventually transformed in to a tourist site. This little strip located between mountains and the coast line is an absolutely stunning location for a holiday, for the whole family. This resort is incredibly popular and has lots of modern amenities.

The main area for nightlife here in Sharm el Sheikh is Na’ama Bay. There are three very distinctive sections to Sharm which are Nabq, Hadaba and the Old Market. All of these have something to offer and there is frequent transport available here, in various forms to make your trip easier. The Old Market is a lovely little area and has real character to it. If visiting here be sure to also visit Alf Lela which will allow you to see a fantastic belly dancing show.

If you are looking for somewhere else to travel, but without public transport, then a taxi drive out to the desert will see you visiting the Bedouins which is full of gorgeous Canyons of various depths of colour and you can even spend days roaming the desert, with guides, taking in some of the amazing sites that this area has to offer.

The main reason for the majority of tourist to go on a holiday to Sharm el Sheikh are to take in the diving sights here. There are two reefs, Ras Mohammed and Tiran, are the most famous areas near Sharm for diving. These can be reached, by boat, in around two hours and these areas are incredibly popular. This is because of the types of marine life that you can find here, if you can bear the crowds you will be pleasantly surprised by the amazing amount of aquatic life that you can take in here. There are huge scores of plankton here that attract some amazing schools of barracudas, sharks and other lesser seen sea creatures. If you can sit on the boat for a couple of hours you will be amazed by the diving here and will see some truly memorable sights that will stay with you forever. Another area that is fantastic for visiting is the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm which, again, will be very busy, but is truly amazing, particularly if you have never experienced diving on a wreck before.

In addition to the wonderful activities I have mentioned above you will be able to partake in horseback riding through the desert and some of the hotels here, the Sofitel Hotel included, offer stable services where you can hire horses, all the relevant equipment, and guides who will ride out in the desert with you and take you on an amazing journey. This is suitable for almost all ages as long as they are able to mount and ride a horse unaided.

If you want to view the desert at a slighter faster pace then you can take out some quad bikes in to the desert as part of a group. This is a memorable experience also and in just a few hours you can travel many miles of desert and if you plan this at the right time you will even be able to watch the sunset and ride back in the cooler evening weather giving a very pleasant experience indeed. This is a particular favourite with the boys in our family and is something that they have now done in several countries just because of the beautiful views that are seen.

Another desert activity that you can take is to travel out with guides and take in some of the local wild life. There is even the option, in selected locations, to camp out in the desert and really experience what life would have been like here before the tourist resort arrived and changed the landscape and the people forever.
